Paul Childs "Bug" Evans, Jr., 81, of Roanoke Rapids died Monday, August 11, 2008, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Evans was a native of Halifax County, the son of the late Paul C. Evans, Sr. and Elizabeth Tudor Evans. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Paul served his country in the Navy and retired in the Merchant Marines. He was a long-time assistant Fire Chief with the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Blowe Evans and a brother, George Evans.

Mr. Evans is survived by his wife, Marie Evans; his daughter, Bonnie V. Evans, of Bryson City, NC; his stepdaughter, Cindy Winstead and her husband, Danny, of Bath, NC; his stepson, Lewis Storey and his wife, Deitrea, of Eden, NC; three grandchildren, Margaret Holt of Virginia Beach, VA, Susan Dailey and Lynn Holt, both of Canton, NC; five step-grandchildren, Iva Marie Winstead, Kelly Winstead, Martha Storey, John Storey, and Lewis Dickens; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Pummer and Elijah Dailey; two sisters, Ellen Jones and her husband, Forest, of Littleton, and Betty Lou Edwards and her husband, Ray, of Roanoke Rapids; his brother, William B. "Bill" Evans of Roanoke Rapids; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Askew Funeral & Cremation Services is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends Wednesday, August 13, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the Askew Funeral Chapel on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The flag in front of the funeral home flies at half-staff in honor of Mr. Evans’ service to his country.
